2012’s run away smoking romance of the year, SEMPER FI, continues in this riveting story written by the self proclaimed belle of the South, Laura Cooper and her devilishly sexy husband Chris. Together they bring Logan McNarry more clearly into vision in this sexy and gripping prequel SHADES OF SHAME.
We already know that Logan and Mattie are made for each other; from the moment she’d walked into the Airport that morning she’d belonged to him heart and soul. Together, they are simply smoldering hot. But was there a time when Logan’s passion melted another heart? Judging from his shyness, emotional devastation in a relationship isn’t new to him. What kind of woman could make a marine like Logan McNarry completely swear off women for so long? We back up eight years to find out!
Washington’s newest Senatorial Intern Leila Johnson has an attitude that rivals that of Lindsay Graham on Benghazi. While most college students would sell themselves for such an opportunity, Leila was handed the job on a silver platter. Of course she’d been raised since birth to be a politician; she’d been sent away from home at a young age in an effort to make her cold and calculating. She’d been educated within an inch of her life. As the Senator’s Chief of Staff, her mother would have nothing less than the best for her daughter. It never would occur to her that being with her mother may have been the best thing for Leila. You may know of Patricia Johnson; she was most recently featured in Time Magazine’s list of Top 100 Bitches in the U.S. She came in an honorable 18th.
Leila Johnson isn’t your typical intern, and if she’d been in Washington more than a week she could’ve knocked her mother right out of that 18th position. She knows what she wants, and knows how to get it. A summer internship in her mother’s office is perfect for a young woman with aspirations of climbing the political ladder. With the Senator squarely in her sights, Leila is positioned to add another notch on her bedpost as she pads her resume at the same time.
The last time she saw Logan McNarry he was a skinny, silver spooned brat. However, dinner at the Senator’s house was a bigger surprise than she ever imagined. Logan was all grown up now, and definitely not how she remembered him. He was nice, gentle, and worst of all, a hopeless romantic. None of the things that would further her career. But Logan brings out something in her that’s not familiar. With him she laughs, she makes love, and dare she think it… feels loved.
His father, on the other hand, represents all she hopes to achieve Money, power, and status. And the fact that the Senator has no problem masterfully using his interns fits absolutely perfectly into her plans. Add in his handsome, rugged exterior that simply reeks of power, and she was panting and ready to climb any ladder he presented. David McNarry wastes no time un-wrapping his new intern and teaching her the ropes of Washington, even though he is all too aware that if Patricia catches him with her daughter he’s road kill.
This vicious Washington political story wraps itself around the McNarry family, showing just how their deceitful relationships intertwine. And in their midst, Leila struggles to overcome her own stereotypes as she steams with Senator David McNarry and melts into the arms of his son Logan. Which man should she choose? The one who fills her heart? Or the one who can put her in the White House?

Shades of Shame - Laura Cooper
4 ½ Stars
Keep in mind that this book is a prequel to the first book in this series, Semper Fi, in which I had formed an opinion of a deceased character in it. Leila. I thought she was a dirty pig who was out for herself and used anyone in her path to further her career. A selfish, lying bitch. A woman who broke a man's heart and sent him reeling. A woman's actions who seemed to be the catalyst of a family falling apart. Boy was I surprised to read Shades of Shame which was HER story from her point of view and saw how wrong I was. Well, not totally wrong. She was no Mother Theresa but not the devil as I thought she was. I actually can say I liked her a little bit. It was nice to see her true feelings towards Logan and that she truly did love him. In reading Semper Fi, I saw the destruction and heartache she left behind and loved that I got to see how she got to that point to begin with. I don't want to give too much away because you really need to read this book after Semper Fi but the twists and turns and revelations of the relationships between characters is shocking!! Truths are revealed and while I liked and felt sorry for characters in the first book, I felt the opposite once I read this book and saw who they really were!!! Loved it and hope there is more to this series!!!!!
Shame is defined as “to cover”; as such, covering oneself, literally or figuratively. It is a conscious condition of what we can outwardly expose what we inwardly want to leave uncovered.
“There are many shades of shame, my dear. You just have to find the one you’re most comfortable with…”
Shades of Shame is the prequel to Semper fi where we met Logan McNarry, the son of Senator David McNarry. He has a scandal that haunts his past and threatens his future. But Logan isn’t the only one with skeletons in his closet.
Senator McNarry has a refined taste and insatiable appetite for his interns. He uses these traits to quench his thirst for his very own brand of kink in his “Den of Sin.”
“The tawdry encounters with women held little emotional importance and were only to satisfy his sexual cravings, nothing more.”
His relationship with his wife Elise is one that pulls at your emotions. All she really wants is her husband, and as you learn of his indiscretions and the emotional bond he has with her, you find yourself rooting for the happily ever after, which I always like in a love story. But this is not that kind of story.
Lelia, the daughter of Elise’s best friend Patricia, is one of the Senator’s interns. She is career minded, head-strong, and doesn’t know what it means to have real unconditional love. Her daddy issues create a situation that puts her heart in the middle of her own emotional game of tug of war. Logan is not who she ever thought she wanted but his power of persuasion has the ability to turn her head his way. Is his love enough to fill the void she is so desperately trying to fill?
The book touches on the principles of BDSM, the domination/submissive relationship and the type of play that goes with that lifestyle. I loved the first book Semper fi, the story of Logan and Mattie. I looked to this book to provide me with the details of Logan’s past in order to explain some of his demons. At times, I found parts of this book seemed to contradict some of the first book’s storyline. I hope the third book will give me the explanations for my confusion.
I enjoyed the story as a standalone book. The characters are developed and relatable even to this vanilla mid-western chick. I was a huge fan of Logan and his story and was not disappointed in his interactions with the other characters. I now have a clearer view of his past and why he made the choices that he did to be in that airport the day he met Mattie. I anticipate the third book will hopefully push the envelope and draw me in as the series continues.

Leila is not the nice person she portrays to be. In fact, she is focused on one thing, and one thing only How to get to the top of her game.......and how to do it fast. She meticulously studies people around her, strategizing what, and in particular who she should do, to get where she wants to go, with little or no consideration of what is left in her wake. In her mind, she is simply taking the steps needed to ensure her ultimate goal.
She had the perfect training ground, her mother is Senator McNarry's Chief of Staff, Patricia Johnson, a woman who herself had nothing less than a singular focus on her political career, to the exclusion of her own daughter. Leila has never known her father and has never known family life of any kind, instead she had been sent off at a young age to mold her, harden her, and prepare her for a life in politics. Ready for her first big move onto the political scene, Leila garners an intern position through her mother's influence, in the offices of Senator McNarry.
Logan has grown up a privileged child, somewhat spoiled and entitled. And even though his relationship with his father in particular, hasn't always been as it should be, Logan is a warm and genuine person. When Leila sees him again after ten years, she is surprised to find the annoying bratty boy has been replaced with a gorgeous giant of a man, who makes her laugh and feel things she is quite unfamiliar with. There is an inherent sweetness to Logan, one that is definitely not present in his father, who has more of a predatorial gleam.
Leila's focus has to remain on the Senator however, since that is with whom her future advancement lies. Everything else must come second. Leila has figured out that the Senator enjoys playing with his interns and plans to use that information to her advantage. He is a handsome older man and has been quite obviously interested in her, and although this is a liaison he would prefer to keep not only from his wife, but from his Chief of Staff as well, he cannot resist the challenge of the new conquest Leila represents.
But the purity of the feelings Logan brings out in Leila, contrasts starkly with the depravity of the scene she immerses herself in for the sake of her career. She is learning what it feels like to be loved, and finds that standing in that glow, she no longer feels a need to be on the shadow side.
*****
This is a cutthroat, depraved story of the inner workings of a political family, and at the same time.........it is a very delicate and tragically beautiful love story.
The authors have done a wonderful job trying to describe the tentative transformation of a political manipulative man-eating bitch in-training, back to the open-eyed, wonder-filled and simply happy young woman, she should have been all along. It is almost as if Leila, who grew up over-exposed to the underbelly of her mother's world, rediscovered her innocence. While at the same time, Logan, who had managed to cling on to as much innocence as possible, ended up exposed to the full extent of his father's immorality.
The sex in this book was imperative to the story, but however well described, most of the scenes did not engage me much, too manipulative or soulless. With the exception of the interplay between Leila and Logan, the chemistry was there......
Other than a few grammatical mistakes here and there, this was a well written story, a good prequel to SEMPER FI. But it left me feeling a bit........dirty, soiled, icky. As if I had touched something slimy, and I almost wished I had read this one first and SEMPER FI second, because I know that book left me feeling a little more positive.
I didn't put the book down once, it was morbid fascination. Almost like watching a house fire .........where at the end, they just manage to save the cat.
The worst book I have ever read in the last 20 years. Do not waste your money, I want my money back.
I loved the story line and that it was set in the DC area was a plus! And of course it is an erotic story!!
This won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it helps to understand the characters more in Semper Fi and why they are like they are. I'm looking forward to the next book.
The book was a good sequel. It was what I was expecting .. and , it delivered
